The Harinagar Sugar Mills Biomass Power project converts sugarcane bagasse — the fibrous residue left after juice extraction — into clean electricity. Located in Bihar, one of India's major sugar-producing states, the project powers industrial operations and supplies surplus electricity to the regional grid.
Sugarcane processing generates large quantities of bagasse that would otherwise be discarded or burned. This project captures that waste material and uses it as biomass fuel to generate electricity through a dedicated co-generation power plant. The electricity produced directly displaces fossil fuel-based grid power.
The project is certified under the UN Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), providing independent third-party verification of all CO₂ reductions achieved.
India's electricity grid remains heavily dependent on coal. By generating renewable electricity from agricultural waste — a byproduct that already exists — this project creates clean energy with no additional land use or feedstock cost. It also reduces the amount of waste burned in the open, cutting particulate and greenhouse gas emissions.
This project is registered and verified under the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism. All carbon credits are tracked in the UNFCCC CDM public registry — fully traceable and permanently retired on behalf of Green Circle customers.
