About this project

Capturing methane before
it reaches the atmosphere.

This certified climate project in Brazil addresses one of the most potent sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the waste sector — methane released from decomposing organic material in landfills. By capturing this gas before it escapes into the atmosphere and converting it into usable energy, the project delivers both significant climate benefits and improved local environmental outcomes.

Methane is approximately 80 times more potent than CO₂ as a greenhouse gas over a 20-year period. Preventing its release — and converting it into electricity — represents a high-impact form of verified climate action that goes far beyond simply generating renewable power.

Climate project Brazil

How it works

From landfill gas
to renewable electricity.

As organic waste decomposes in landfill sites, it produces a mixture of gases — primarily methane and CO₂ — known as landfill gas. Without intervention, this methane escapes into the atmosphere, contributing significantly to global warming.

This project installs a network of collection infrastructure beneath and within the landfill to capture the gas as it forms. The captured methane is then piped to a generation facility where it is combusted in engines or turbines to produce electricity — supplying clean power to the local grid while destroying the methane before it can escape.

The result is a double climate benefit: methane is prevented from reaching the atmosphere, and the electricity generated displaces fossil-fuel-based power that would otherwise supply the same demand.

Climate and environmental impact

Multiple benefits,
one verified project.

This project delivers a range of documented environmental benefits that go beyond carbon reduction alone:

Captures and destroys high-potency methane emissions from landfill waste

Generates renewable electricity from recovered landfill gas

Reduces odour and local air quality impacts from uncontrolled landfill emissions

Supports improved waste management and environmental recovery at the site

All emission reductions are calculated, monitored, and verified in accordance with internationally recognised methodologies — providing a fully traceable and credible climate impact record.

Certification

Independently verified
to international standards.

This climate project is certified under established international standards for carbon project verification. Emission reductions are measured, documented, and audited by accredited third-party organisations to ensure accuracy, transparency, and credibility.

Every tonne of CO₂ equivalent avoided or destroyed is independently verified — ensuring that the climate claims associated with this project are real, measurable, permanent, and additional. This gives participating companies a fully defensible foundation for their climate communications and ESG reporting.

Green Circle connection

How your company
connects to this project.

Green Circle does not develop or operate climate projects directly. We consolidate contributions from participating companies and direct them towards certified, high-integrity projects like this landfill gas initiative — ensuring scale, efficiency, and verified impact.

When your company joins a Green Circle program, your annual contribution supports this and other certified projects in the portfolio. You receive a Certificate of Carbon Neutrality, all communication assets, and the ability to make an honest, documented climate claim — backed by independently verified emission reductions.
