About this project

River-powered electricity
with minimal footprint.

The Vanala Small Scale Hydropower Project is a run-of-the-river renewable energy installation in India. Unlike large dam projects, it uses the natural flow of a river to generate electricity — without significant reservoir construction or large-scale environmental disruption.

By producing clean electricity from flowing water, the project displaces coal-based power from the regional grid and delivers independently verified reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Small scale hydropower is one of the most established and low-impact forms of renewable energy available.

How it works

Run-of-river hydro:
clean energy, minimal impact.

Run-of-the-river hydropower harnesses the kinetic energy of flowing water to drive turbines and generate electricity. Water is diverted from the river through intake structures, passes through turbines, and is returned to the river downstream — with no large reservoir required and minimal disruption to the natural water flow.

This approach makes small scale hydropower particularly well suited to environmentally sensitive locations. It generates electricity continuously from a natural resource, producing no emissions during operation and requiring no fuel inputs beyond the river itself.

The Vanala project feeds clean electricity directly into the regional grid, where every kilowatt-hour it generates displaces electricity that would otherwise have been produced from fossil fuel sources.

Climate impact

Measured, verified,
and additional.

The project delivers real, documented climate benefits. Emission reductions are calculated using the carbon intensity of the regional electricity grid as a baseline. Every tonne of CO₂ equivalent avoided is monitored against this baseline and independently verified by accredited third parties.

During its crediting period, the Vanala project has generated verified CO₂ reductions that are traceable, measurable, and fully documented — meeting the strict requirements of UN CDM certification and providing a credible foundation for climate claims by supporting companies.

Certification

Verified under the
UN Clean Development Mechanism.

The Vanala Small Scale Hydropower Project is registered under the Clean Development Mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change — the most rigorous international framework for verifying carbon reductions in developing economies.

All emission reductions are independently audited by accredited Designated Operational Entities. This third-party verification ensures that every claimed reduction is real, measurable, permanent, and additional — providing the foundation for credible climate communication by any company that supports the project.
